Okay, I thought this would be simple enough. I just took the script out of the red car example and pasted it into a simple cube. I figured I could just drive the cube around and get the basics down. But it barely moves. It starts to then it stops. I also get several script errors. The example from the book works fine, but how do I move it to a new car?

Using a cube can be a great way to test a vehicle script. However, your cube is BOTH the root prim and the tires. Since the cube comes into contact with the ground. It sounds like your "cube vehicle" has too much friction to move and is tipping over. Make the cube of glass and I bet it works just fine.
