Linden Lab is laying off 30% of their workforce...

I do think virtual worlds, such as SL, are probably somewhere in the trough of disillusionment, on the "hype cycle" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hype_cycle). Perhaps working its way up the slope of enlightenment.
Linden Labs, I think, is just getting smacked by the economy, like quite a few companies are. I don't see them closing the whole thing up, I think they are just trying to cut losses until profits might increase. Probably won't be seeing quite a bit of new and innovative technologies out of them for a bit though, as they refocus.
Just my $0.02
Did you see this, this morning?

I think Linden Lab is in big trouble. It looks like their CEO quit. They are also giving up on getting businesses to use them and focusing on consumers. Sounds like they are kind of spinning figuring out what direction they have, if any.
Good that Heaton Research is more focused on neural networks, than a big virtual world that could just "go poof" one morning.
I think Second Life is just trying to find its place. There were some who thought it was "Web 3.0". Clearly it is not. I can't image replacing our universities website with some sort of Second Life island. It is just not good for conveying that much info and making it easily searched.
Unfortunately there is just a ton of adult/weird content on there that just gives SL a terrible reputation. But that is what it is, there are parts of the Internet that are equally as strange.
It does seem to have its place for certain online meeting collaboration and courses. I am currently developing a college course to be delivered online.
