Building with Layers and Synapses

You are now familiar with all of the layer and synapse types supported by Encog. You will now be given a brief introduction to building ANNs with these neural network types. You will see how to construct several neural network types. They will be used to solve problems related to the XOR operator. For now, the XOR operator is a good enough introduction to several neural network architectures. We will see more interesting examples, as the book progresses. We will begin with the feedforward neural network.

Using a Neural Network

We will now look at how to structure a neural network for a very simple problem. We will consider creating a neural network that can function as an XOR operator. Learning the XOR operator is a frequent “first example” when demonstrating the architecture of a new neural network. Just as most new programming languages are first demonstrated with a program that simply displays “Hello World”, neural networks are frequently demonstrated with the XOR operator.

Programming Neural Networks with Encog 2 in Java/C#

Announcing two upcoming books. Hopefully by the year's end.

Programming Neural Networks with Encog 2 in Java, ISBN 978-1-60439-007-0
Programming Neural Networks with Encog 2 in C#, ISBN 978-1-60439-010-0

Encog is an advanced neural network and bot programming framework. This book focuses on using Encog to create a variety of neural network architectures using the Java programming language. Neural network architectures such as feedforward/perceptrons, Hopfield, Elman, Jordan, Radial Basis Function, and Self Organizing maps are all demonstrated.

Encog Presentation at Gateway Java Users Group (St. Louis)

On Tuesday, June 2, 2009 I will do a presentation on Encog at the Gateway Java Users Group in St. Louis, MO at 6:00 PM. The information on this presentation can be found here. I will post the material for this presentation online after I complete it.

Implementing a Java Neural Network with the Encog Framework

Neural Network Classes Beginning this Week

The two neural network courses that we are offering(C# and Java) are beginning this week. Today actually! I already have the video for the first class session posted online, as well as the course material. The first step is to actually "enroll" for the course. This will add your name to a list that I am keeping for each of the course. You need to create a user ID to enroll, then just go to the course you want to enroll for, and select "enroll". There are also two forums setup for any questions. I will be posting more information as this progresses.

Tic-Tac-Toe

The game of tic-tac-toe, also called naughts and crosses in many parts of the world, can be an interesting application of neural networks trained by genetic algorithms. Tic-tac-toe has very simple rules. Most human players quickly grow bored with the game, since it is so easy to learn. Once two people have mastered tic-tac-toe, games almost always result in a tie.

Two New Neural Network Books Coming Soon

I am nearing the final stages of two new books. Introduction to Neural Networks for Java and Introduction to Neural Networks for C#. The Java book is the Second Edition to the original "Introduction to Neural Networks with Java". This is a considerable update to the original text. The covers for the two new books can be seen below. The Java book is expected to be out in September,2008. The C# book by January,2009. More information on these two books will be posted in the coming weeks.
