- Using Tileable Textures in Second Life
Tileable textures are a special type of texture that can be tiled. Tiling a texture means repeating the texture in a grid fashion. If the texture is tileable, then there will be no visible “seam” where two textures touch.
Tileable textures are very useful in Second Life, because they can cover large areas. Consider a large grassy field. There is no reason to create one huge grass texture image to cover the entire field. Rather, create one small tileable texture and tile it across the entire field.
When searching the Internet for textures, the ability to tile is an important consideration in deciding which image to use. Many textures found on the Internet are already tileable. However, it is also possible to transform non-tileable images into tileable images. This technique will be discussed in this chapter.
