Second Life provides many tools in-world which allow users to create their own content. There are many aspects to content creation in Second Life. Very complex objects can be created using Second Life's geometric building primitives. Additionally, these objects can be brought to life by adding scripts. Scripts are small computer programs that tell Second Life objects how to interact with the world around them.

Scripting and building are both accomplished inside the Second Life world. All of the tools necessary for building and scripting are already built into the Second Life client. However, additional content must often be created outside the Second Life client. This content is created using third party software, and then uploaded into the Second Life world. This book explains how to create additional content, which can be used to enhance your Second Life builds and scripts. This book assumes the reader already has a basic knowledge of building for Second Life. Many of the techniques presented are only of use to Second Life builders. For an introduction to the Second Life building process, Beginning Building in Second Life, ISBN 1-60439-004-2, may be useful. For more information on scripting, please see Scripting Recipes for Second Life, ISBN 1-60439-000-X.
